The main way to use this Benihana Ginger sauce is for shrimp, steak, egg rolls, wontons, vegetables, etc. It is also great as a salad dressing or dipping for chargrilled lettuce wedges or chargrilled green onions into it. On busy nights it works as a quick marinade for chicken breasts.

This Japanese Steakhouse dipping sauce is surprisingly easy to make. You only need 5 ingredients (and a few optional additions) and they’re all items you probably already have in your pantry.

  • onion – you can use red or yellow onion.
  • ginger – fresh ginger root is preferable and peeled.
  • lemon juice – the juice from about 2 lemons.
  • rice wine vinegar – but I have use apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar instead.
  • Tamari soy sauce – Use a gluten free soy sauce or regular soy sauce to your preference.
  • optional: maple syrup (but highly recommended as it balances out the tart flavors).

You certainly can. Fresh ginger, along with all the other fresh ingredients gives a better flavor. But also fresh ginger adds chunkiness to the sauce. However, if you prefer then please use the powdered version to your taste.

We absolutely love this dipping sauce with everything. We tend to eat it with Hibachi Fried Rice and delicious Hibachi Shrimp made in the Air Fryer.

  • ¾ cup (175ml) Tamari soy sauce or regular soy sauce if not gluten free
