Back in the day, electric toothbrushes were an object of fascination. They were rarely sighted in people’s bathrooms and were mostly known for their vibrating bristles. Today, given their advanced features ranging from pressure sensors and built-in timers to LED whitening lights, a large population of people prefer electric toothbrushes over manual ones. Electric Toothbrushes Vs Regular Toothbrushes
Electric toothbrushes have proven to be effective in maintaining oral hygiene, with several studies suggesting their superiority in plaque removal compared to traditional manual brushes, says Dr Pratyusha.
Dental plaque is a sticky coating on the teeth that occurs when foods and saliva mix with the naturally-present bacteria in the mouth. Poor oral hygiene and a continued high intake of free sugars are said to intensify plaque buildup, increasing the risk of periodontal or gum diseases.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing between the teeth daily to remove dental plaque effectively.
Doing so with the help of an electric toothbrush may contribute to a more thorough cleaning of teeth and gums, says Dr Pratyusha.
“The hype surrounding electric toothbrushes is attributed to their convenience and technological features. Many models come equipped with built-in timers, ensuring users brush for the recommended two minutes. Additionally, some include pressure sensors that alert users if they're applying too much force, preventing potential damage to gums and enamel,” she adds.
A 2014 review published in the Cochrane found that there was a significant reduction in plaque and gingivitis risk in people who used electric toothbrushes for more than a month. While there was an 11% reduction in plaque at one to three months of use, there was a 6% reduction for people with gingivitis for the same time period.
‘The Benefits Of Electric Toothbrushes Go Beyond Plaque Removal’
Scientific evidence shows that electric toothbrushes are more effective at plaque removal. However, Dr Pratyusha suggests that the benefits of electric toothbrushes go far beyond.
She said, “They are often recommended for individuals with gum issues as the gentle yet effective bristle movements can promote gum health,” adding that their user-friendly features make them particularly appealing, especially for those looking to enhance their oral care routine.
In fact, electric toothbrushes may prove particularly beneficial for people with orthodontic appliances, such as braces, as per a study published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
Note The Potential Risks
While electric toothbrushes offer numerous benefits, they may also come with some risks.
Dr Pratyusha says, “Improper technique or excessive pressure may lead to gum recession or enamel abrasion.”
Additionally, individuals with specific dental conditions, such as periodontal disease or tooth sensitivity, should consult with their dentist before incorporating an electric toothbrush into their routine,” she advises.

When it comes to electric toothbrushes, they are safe to use for most people unless one is suffering from an existing gum disease or does not possess the motor skills to use them. Remember to use ultra-soft bristles in circular oscillating gentle motion instead of to and fro motion. Moreover, electric brushes must be changed every month.
