What Are Some Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar on Teeth?

The use of apple cider vinegar can obtain the following benefits-

  • For reducing toothache- Apple cider vinegar is one of the best natural remedies to reduce toothache. Swishing the mouth with two or three teaspoons of apple cider vinegar helps kill bacteria and reduce infection, pain, and inflammation. It is essential to clean it entirely by rinsing the mouth with clean water.
  • To prevent gingivitis- Gingivitis (gum disease) is the most common dental problem. It's characterized by swollen and bleeding gums, a foul smell from the mouth, and may lead to periodontal problems. Regularly rinsing the mouth with apple cider vinegar helps prevent gum diseases. In addition, due to its acidic pH level, it prevents the growth and accumulation of bacteria between the teeth and gums.
  • For teeth whitening- Apple cider vinegar has anti-inflammatory properties that naturally clean the teeth and gum. Rubbing a finger dipped in apple cider vinegar on the teeth for one to two minutes daily can naturally whiten the teeth.
  • To eliminate bad breath- Apple cider vinegar balances and washes away the accumulated bacteria between the teeth and gums, thereby eliminating bad breath. It also aids in digestion and balancing the pH level in the mouth.
  • As a natural mouthwash- Apple cider vinegar, when used as a mouthwash, kills only the harmful bacteria in the mouth and retains good bacteria. Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar diluted with one cup of distilled water can be used as a mouthwash.

Can Apple Cider Vinegar Damage Teeth?

Apple cider vinegar is twice fermented apple juice and is highly acidic in nature. It has an average pH between 2.5 and 3.0. This high amount of acid can destroy or demineralize the outermost layer of teeth (enamel). If the tooth enamel (outermost layer) is destroyed, the body cannot form or replace it. In addition, damage to the enamel can lead to increased sensitivity and tooth cavities.

Who Should Avoid Using Apple Cider Vinegar?

Along with the potential benefits of apple cider vinegar on the teeth, its drug interactions should be considered before using it. The following medications can show adverse effects when used with apple cider vinegar-

  • Diuretic Medication- This can cause too low potassium levels.
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin)- This drug is used to lower the potassium level in the blood. When consumed with apple cider vinegar, it can drop potassium to a dangerous level.
  • Diabetes Medication- Apple cider vinegar may lower blood sugar to a dangerous level.
