Rematch of 2021 Group Stage

Once again, Qatar and Honduras will meet in the CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage. Last time around, both sides advanced to the quarterfinals. However, they both lost their opening matches on Sunday and will look to bounce back on Thursday evening. Neither team can afford another loss in their pursuit of another quarterfinals appearance. We’ll run through the Qatar vs Honduras odds from a crucial match outside of Phoenix.

Date, time:
Location: University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, USA

Head-to-Head

Qatar and Honduras met for the first time two years ago. In the Gold Cup group stage, Qatar picked up a 2-0 win as Homam Ahmed and Abdulaziz Hatem scored. It ended up being the group decider, as Qatar finished first in the Group D CONCACAF Gold Cup standings and Honduras came in second.

Qatar Blow Lead in Opener

    • Last Match: 2-1 L vs. Haiti
    • Standings: 0-1, 3rd Group B
    • Next Match: Jul. 2 vs. Mexico

Qatar managed to go unbeaten in the group stage in their first Gold Cup appearance a couple of years ago. This time around, things started off auspiciously once again as the Maroons opened up the scoring vs. Haiti. Yusuf Abdurisag capitalized on a scramble in the box to curl a right-footed shot in the side netting. Qatar had a golden opportunity to go 2-0 up but Homam Ahmed hit the crossbar.

Just before the half, Haiti won a penalty on a handball and Duckens Nazon converted right down the middle. Neither team could find a breakthrough in a back-and-forth second half until the 97th minute.

Carnejy Antoine made a smart run into the box for Haiti and assisted Frantzdy Pierrot. So, Qatar blew a lead to drop coach Carlos Queiroz’s first competitive match. Queiroz has tons of experience, though, and has previously managed all sorts of teams from Real Madrid to Portugal to Nagoya Grampus Eight and Iran.

In his second competitive match, the Qatar vs Honduras odds price the Maroons as slight underdogs. It may take some time for Queiroz to find his best lineup but he’ll want his players to be more clinical with their chances, regardless.

Honduras Outclassed by Mexico

    • Last Match: 0-4 L vs. Mexico
    • Standings: 0-1, 4th Group B
    • Next Match: Jul. 2 vs. Haiti

It took just 51 seconds for Mexico to get on the scoresheet vs. Honduras. Luis Romo scored a stunning half volley to put Honduras’ backs against the wall. Romo doubled Mexico’s lead on a header midway through the first half. Things went from bad to worse for Honduras in the second half, as El Tri added two more goals.

Honduras lost 4-0 for their biggest defeat since losing 7-0 to Brazil in 2019. The remaining CONCACAF dates for Honduras in the Gold Cup are Thursday vs. Qatar and July 2nd vs. Haiti. They’ll likely need to pick up points in both of these matches to advance to the quarterfinals for a second straight tournament.

Despite the lopsided scoreline vs. Mexico, Honduras did manage 45 percent of possession. They figure to create more chances vs. Qatar as Los Catrachos got off just one shot on target on Sunday. Perhaps we’ll see active leading scorer Jerry Bengtson get the nod up front vs. Qatar.

Match Analysis and Odds

This is already a must-win for both teams, which should make for an interesting watch. The Qatar vs. Honduras odds list this as a pick’em and it could certainly go either way. Honduras pk comes in at -120 odds, while Qatar come in at -110 ATS odds.

In six previous Gold Cup matches, Qatar have averaged over two goals per game but they’ve lost their last two games. At +165 moneyline odds, they’re slight underdogs for the match. National team mainstays Akram Afif and Hasan Al-Haydos are not in the squad for the Gold Cup, which helps explain why Honduras are favored.

Honduras sit at +160 odds to get a win but they have dropped their last three games, in all competitions. In those games, they’ve been outscored 9-1 and have struggled to create chances. Under 2.5 goals stand at -135 odds here and a draw shows +225 odds in a crucial Group B contest.
