What makes this a “detox” smoothie? As you may know, we don’t do drastic detox diets and cleanses over here. In my experience, that leads to binge eating rather than creating consistent habits that lead to real results.

You can support your body’s natural detoxification process by consistently enjoying more whole foods and eating less processed ones that contain artificial coloring, flavors, and ingredients.

This green smoothie will help you do just that. Enjoy it for breakfast or share it as a snack for an easy nutrient boost.

Detox Smoothie Ingredients

Loaded with antioxidants and minerals, these simple ingredients may help support your body’s natural detox organs, including the kidneys, liver, and skin.

Here’s what’s inside:

  • Green Apple: One study shows that eating an apple a day may be almost as effective as taking a statin drug at reducing the risk for heart disease. The pectin that apples contain acts as a prebiotic and may promote the growth of good bacteria in your gut, too!
  • Pineapple: Rich in antioxidants, this tropical fruit also contains bromelaine, a protein-digesting enzyme. It helps break protein down into amino acids, and as a result, may boost digestion.
  • Banana: A great source of potassium, eating bananas may help to lower the risk of chronic kidney disease according to a 2019 study.
  • Ginger: Ginger is considered to have anti-inflammatory effects in the body and may help to lower fasting blood sugar levels. It has also been shown to speed up digestion, causing the stomach to empty faster.
  • Spinach: This leafy green has a neutral flavor when you add it to a smoothie, and this study has shown that it may help prevent oxidative damage in the body.
  • Cilantro: This fresh herb contains a compound called dodecanal that has been shown to have antibacterial effects against salmonella. Parsley can be used as a swap if you prefer!
  • Lime: Limes are a great source of vitamin C, which has been shown to increase the production of white blood cells in test tube studies, so it may help to protect against infections and disease.

This smoothie is loaded with fiber to help keep you feeling full and satisfied, without a lethargic or sluggish feeling that can come from eating something less nutritious. If you’d like to make it more filling, feel free to add a scoop of your favorite protein powder or a tablespoon of ground flax seeds or hulled hemp seeds.

If you’d rather use another liquid for blending, swap the water for coconut water, or even coconut milk for a creamy result. You can add any other veggies you love, too! Cucumber adds hydration, and frozen berries will add extra vitamins to each sip.

(Frozen blueberries or raspberries will also help hide the green color if that’s an issue for you.)

How to Make a Detox Smoothie

Slice the green apple into chunks, removing the core, seeds, and stem.

Add the apple to a high-speed blender, along with the water, spinach, pineapple chunks, frozen banana, fresh ginger, cilantro, and lime juice.

(If you don’t have limes on hand, lemons will work, too!)

Secure the lid on your blender and blend until smooth, about 60 seconds. There should be no visible chunks of fruit or greens.

Pour the shake into a glass right away and serve immediately. It has the best taste and texture right away.

If you have any leftovers to store, they can be kept in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Smoothies will separate when stored, so shake well before serving again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this smoothie help you lose weight?

Since this detox smoothie is loaded with nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, I think it’s a good choice if you’re trying to lose weight. The pectin found in apples and the fiber in all of these ingredients will help keep you full, and if you use it as a meal replacement you may end up eating fewer calories than you normally would, which may also contribute to weight loss.

Can I change the flavor?

Yes, of course! When you make your smoothie, you’re in control of how it tastes. Add almond butter for creaminess, or a dash of cinnamon, cayenne, or turmeric, if you like extra spices. You can also browse other smoothie recipes if you want more inspiration.
