In a groundbreaking move, Equity Group and iamtheCODE have joined forces to empower a staggering 600,000 African youth with digital skills, igniting a movement that could reshape the continent's future. iamtheCODE, a global force in STEAMD education, has partnered with EquityGroup Foundation (EGF) to launch a Digital Academy, offering over 65,000 free online resources and certifications. This initiative is designed with a unique focus on inclusivity, targeting women, girls, and youth, especially those from underserved communities.
Building on Equity Group Foundation's successful programs like Wings to Fly, which has supported over 60,000 young people through secondary education, this partnership aims to expand its reach to refugees and vulnerable communities, empowering them to achieve economic independence. Dr. James Mwangi, Executive Chairman of Equity Group Foundation, emphasized the critical need for future-ready skills, noting the growing demand for technical expertise in AI, coding, and data analytics.
"Africa's path to economic transformation lies in leveraging technology. We must ensure our youth are equipped with the skills of the future. This partnership is about creating opportunities, not just training. With these skills, our young people can compete globally and contribute to Africa's innovation," Dr. Mwangi stated.
iamtheCODE, with its presence in 89 countries and over 65,000 courses, is a powerhouse in digital skills development. Lady Mariéme Jamme, its Founder and CEO, highlighted the urgency of upskilling Africa's youth, emphasizing the need for technical, life, and soft skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world. "We're in emergency mode. Our people need skills, and this partnership represents Africa's spirit of collaboration. Together, we'll ensure every girl has the chance to lead in the digital economy," she said.
In addition to technical training, the program focuses on essential life skills like collaboration and empathy, preparing learners for the modern workplace. Equity Group's support includes loans for tools, internships, and startup capital, while also connecting graduates to its vast customer base, driving economic growth. iamtheCODE's evidence-based approach will track and showcase the program's success, ensuring accountability and impact.
This collaboration aligns with Kenya Vision 2030, the African Union's Agenda 2063, and the UN's SDGs, particularly SDGs 4, 5, and 9. It's a step towards Equity's vision of private sector-led development financing and its Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan.
