Zermatt has no airport of its own and the most convenient airports are in Geneva or Zurich, although the nearest airport is in Sion. Sion has a limited flight schedule, which is why people often opt to travel to the airports in Geneva or Zurich. Once you reach here, you can take a train to Zermatt. Do remember that Geneva can get quite busy as people come there for skiing expeditions and during peak travel times, it can be crowded making flights can be frighteningly expensive. Zurich is the better option to travel forward to Zermatt. From either of these airports, you can take a train to Zermatt and it takes approximately three hours.By Air
Zermatt is a car-free town. If you are coming by bus or car, then you will have to get down at Täsch which is around 7km from Zermatt. From here, you can take a train to Zermatt. The journey is breath taking as you near Zermatt, with mountains soaring high in the air.By Road
The most convenient way to reach Zermatt would be by train. Since this is a car-free town, it’s also the only way you will be able to actually reach the town. There are direct trains to Zermatt from Zurich and Geneva airports that run every hour. Getting a Swiss Rail Pass makes travelling much more convenient and economical. If you’re travelling with family, then children below 16 years can travel for free. To have a better idea of which trains are travelling where, do check the Swiss rail website to see the comprehensive options available. If you have come here by private car, you have to leave it at the Matterhorn Terminal Tasch and get on a shuttle train to Zermatt. The shuttle train runs every 20 minutes during the day.By Rail
Getting around in Zermatt
It’s important to remember that Zermatt is a car-free zone and so if you enter the town in your car, even by mistake you will be charged a steep fine. You will have no option but to pay it, so do remember this because unless you have visited the town before, you might miss the sign that tells you that cars aren’t allowed here.
By Taxi
Most of the pricey hotels have electric cars which are used to ferry you from the station to the hotel, so you can check in your luggage. These taxis/cars are not used for anything else.
By Bus
The main public transport here is by buses. Zermatt has a small fleet of solar and electric powered buses which take you from one end of the town to the other. It also takes you to all the ski stations every 10 minutes. If you have got yourself a ski pass, the tickets are included in that. Although the buses are a good way of getting around the town, they do not pass through the main street. Do remember that there are two types of buses in Zermatt – the green and red lines. The green line connects a few lift stations to the train station while the red line has another route – from Winkelmatten to the resort. The buses can be differentiated based on their bumpers.
By Train
Get a Swiss rail pass and you can get very good travel discounts. The Swiss Metro system is considered to be the best and most economic system to travel from Zermatt. There’s also the Gornergrat Railway which takes you to the top of Mount Gornergrat, where you can look around the beautiful sights and bask in the cool sunshine. Many people take the train up and hike the way back down.
By Cable Car
If you want to have a heart-stopping experience, don’t miss the cable car ride that goes all the way up to the summit of Klein Matterhorn (Little Matterhorn). This is not to be mistaken for the larger Matterhorn but nevertheless, a climb up here can be quite transfixing as well. It’s said to be the highest scenic outlook in all of Europe. The round trip costs around 85 Euro.
