I consistently hear clients and friends stressing about overindulging and eating unhealthy at BBQs, holidays, festivals and on vacations.
The best strategy that I’ve found for my clients to turn things around quickly is a simple one day reset. Spending just 24 hours focusing on detoxifying your body does wonders for mentally putting you back on track. Follow the simple plan below and you’ll be bloat-free in no time.
Upon Rising
Lemon Water: Drink 1 cup of warm water with 1⁄2 squeezed lemon. Aside from giving your body a boost of vitamin C, lemon water stimulates the digestive tract and revs up your metabolism.
Throughout the Day
Hydration is Key: Drink at least 8 glasses of water to flush your system of toxins and bloat. Check out my blog titled, “Hydrate Smart” for detoxifying recipes.
Eat healthy foods:
- Non-Starchy Vegetables
- Fruit
- Protein (chicken, turkey, fish, beef, buffalo, pork, lamb, shellfish, eggs)
- Nuts and Seeds (raw or roasted with no added oil)
- Healthy Fats (olive oil, coconut oil, avocado)
- Non-Dairy Milk and Yogurts
Eat natural diuretic foods: These foods flush out bloat and provide you with a host of health benefits, such as antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. My favorites are celery, lemon, bell peppers, garlic, onions, watermelon, cucumber, grapes, ginger, berries, and asparagus. Green tea and dandelion root tea are also great de-bloaters.
Eliminate common food allergens and trigger foods:
- Grains
- Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners
- Dairy
- Beans
- Alcohol
- Processed Food and Junk Food
Approved recipes:
Exercise: Moving boosts your metabolism and speeds up weight loss. Strive for at least 30 minutes, whether it is cardio, weight training, Orange Theory, yoga, Pilates or taking a brisk walk over your lunch hour.
Evening
The kitchen is closed after dinner: Stop eating 2-3 hours before bedtime and no late-night snacking. Drink herbal tea instead to calm your cravings. Ginger, chamomile, and peppermint are great for digestion.
Detox bath: Soak in a detox bath (2 cups Epson salt, 1 cup baking soda and 10 drops lavender oil) for 20 minutes to sweat out toxins and prepare your body for sleep. You need 7-9 hours of sleep.
If you’re feeling great, stay on the reset for a few days or the whole week! And remember, even committing to simple switches, such as limiting your alcohol intake to the weekends or giving up soda, can lead to big results over time.
