What to do after Icon treatment? ›

⦁ For at least 24 hours after treatment, refrain from any dark colored foods or beverages that may stain teeth. For example, do not eat or drink mustard, soy sauce, grape juice or dark colored juices, dark colored sodas, coffee or tea, or anything with artificial coloring.

After your procedure, you will receive a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready. While you have your temporary crown, remember to: Eat soft foods and avoid sticky foods like chewing gum and caramel candies. Be gentle when brushing and refrain from flossing until your permanent restoration is in place.

But after Icon treatment, many patients can successfully whiten teeth with beautiful results. Dentists recommend that professional teeth whitening be done at a subsequent appointment from the Icon treatment and not immediately after.

We ask that you avoid foods and drinks that could stain your teeth for 24 hours after the treatment. So, please avoid coffee, tea, cola, fruit juices, red wine, tomato-based sauces, curry, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar for the next day. Eating non-staining foods will give your new smile time to adjust.

Disadvantages to ICON treatment

One of the primary disadvantages of ICON is that it does not always offer a permanent solution to white spots on teeth. While it can help reduce their appearance, the spots may return, or new ones may develop if proper oral hygiene practices are not maintained.

ICON treatment is known to last an average of two years, but anecdotally, many dentists have observed that their patients go five years or longer without having their white spots reappear.

In the first 24 hours, you will need to avoid hard or chewy foods, brushing with rotary toothbrush, and flossing around the crown. You may also notice small chunks of extra bonding material around the base of the crown. This is normal and these extra pieces should fall off within a few days while brushing your teeth.

Following surgery, keep the wound clean and dry. The dressing should be removed and wounds covered with adhesive bandages on the first or second day after surgery. Do not remove the paper strips or cut any of the visible sutures. Reapply the ace wrap, if applicable, for 5-7 days to control swelling.

In summary, after getting a crown cemented, it's best to wait for about 24 hours before eating. Stick to soft foods initially, and gradually reintroduce your regular diet over the next few days.

If the discolored lesion remains, the etching step should be repeated. You may repeat the etching step up to two more times after the first etch. If the lesion remains discolored after three total rounds of etching, contact your local DMG representative for further instruction.

Does Icon treatment remove enamel? ›

Icon treatment is completed in a single visit; there's no need for anesthetic injections and there's no drilling involved. After cleaning the teeth that have white spot lesions, the lesions are etched to remove the outermost layer of enamel, where remineralization has occurred.

ICON resin infiltration is considered to be a safe and low-risk procedure. However, as with any dental treatment, there are potential risks and side effects to consider. These may include temporary tooth sensitivity, allergic reactions to the materials used, or incomplete resolution of the white spot lesions.

It's recommended to avoid teeth whitening treatments in close proximity to ICON treatment since this can make white spots reappear. Whitening can be done a few weeks prior to or following ICON.
