Comparison of a Novel Sonic Toothbrush With a Traditional Sonic Toothbrush and Manual Brushing and Flossing on Plaque, Gingival Bleeding, and Inflammation: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
To determine the effectiveness of WaterpikTM Sonic-FusionTM in reducing plaque and the clinical signs of inflammation as compared to Sonicare® DiamondClean.
This is a randomized, controlled, parallel clinical trial. Thirty five subjects who met the criteria were enrolled into each group. One group used WaterpikTM Sonic-FusionTM, brushing for two minutes and flossing for one minute, and one group used Sonicare® DiamondClean electric toothbrush with DiamondClean Brush Head. Gum Health was measured using bleeding on probing (BOP) and the Modified Gingival Index (MGI) at baseline, two weeks, and four weeks. Plaque was evaluated by the Rustogi Modified Navy Plaque Index (RMNPI). Scores were measured at baseline, two weeks, and four weeks. All subjects were provided written and verbal instructions.
Results
Both Sonic-FusionTM and Sonicare® DiamondClean showed a significant reduction in BOP and MGI from baseline to four weeks (p<0.001). The WaterpikTM Sonic-FusionTM group was significantly more effective than Sonicare® DiamondClean for all clinical parameters, improving BPO by 38%, MGI by 38%, and RMNPI by 36%.
Conclusion
This study demonstrates that the WaterpikTM Sonic-FusionTM is significantly more effective than Sonicare® DiamondClean for improving oral health.

Equipped with sonic technology, the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 offers gentle yet powerful cleaning action. It features a pressure sensor and multiple brushing modes, including a gum care mode for effective periodontal disease management.
We frequently get asked which Sonicare toothbrush is best for gum recession. This is our recommendation. This Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 allows you to change intensities to allow you to brush with less intensity if your gums are feeling sensitive. It also alerts you if you're brushing too hard by pulsing.
Based on the data, this study demonstrates that both sonic and ionic toothbrushes are capable of removing plaque and reducing gingivitis and bleeding effectively.
Gum health has been known to improve after just two weeks of using a Sonicare electric toothbrush. That means inflammation and bleeding lessens in two weeks. The Sonicare is non-abrasive when used appropriately so there is less erosion to the tooth enamel. Healthy gums and less plaque means whiter teeth.
Electric Toothbrushes are Proven to be the Best for Gum Health. A consistent oral care regimen can help keep gum disease from taking root. When looking for the best toothbrush for your gums, consider switching to an electric toothbrush.
There are many choices, when it comes to electric toothbrushes, but Oral-B is the first to have been accepted by the ADA. Dental professionals agree, 3D Cleaning Action technology safely and effectively removes plaque and helps to prevent and reduce gingivitis.
Handling is also easy, since the sonic toothbrushes are usually light and ergonomically shaped. One potential downside to sonic toothbrushes is that they can be too noisy for some people.
Sonicare's heads are large and flat compared to Oral-B's small round brushes, and they're long-lasting, according to Wellspring Dental dentist Mandy Nebel, who prefers Sonicare over other brands. This specific model — one of two from the brand accepted by the ADA — is a more entry-level Sonicare.
While both the sonic and electric toothbrushes work well in comparison to the manual toothbrush, the sonic toothbrush is undeniably more efficient in cleaning your teeth. Electric toothbrushes typically have bristles that either scrub forward and backward or rotate in a mechanized motion.
Conclusion. If you are suffering from receding gums, using an electric toothbrush can be a great way to help improve your gum health. They help remove plaque and bacteria from teeth and gums, which can help reverse receding gums.
Promote Gum Health: The above study also stated that electric toothbrushes had been shown to stimulate blood flow and promote healthy gum tissue growth, more than manual toothbrushes.
Moreover, 6 months' use of Sonicare led to actual improvement in probing attachment levels of periodontal pockets.” Here at Creekside Dental, our hygienists unanimously recommend the Sonicare over the Oral-B because we have also seen far better improvement in periodontal health when using the Sonicare.
To prevent gum damage, it is advisable to choose a soft or extra-soft brush head, use gentle circular motions, and allow the bristles to do the work without exerting excessive force.
The Pro 2 toothbrush comes as standard with Cross Action heads. Bleeding gums can also be very tender, so for complete protection and gentler brush, I'd recommend buying Oral B Sensi Ultra-Thin brush heads. These are still tough on the plaque, but gentle on your bleeding gums.
