Peeps, I absolutely adore rutabaga mash!!!! It is one of my favorite side dishes to serve alongside meals. Thankfully my love for this cute root has transferred to the kiddoes.

One of their most requested meals these days is a big bowl of Instant Pot Rutabaga Mash and Crispy Golden Air Fryer Fish. Sooooo good.

I really am excited to share this pressure cooker rutabaga mash recipe with you today. It is super easy to make in the Instant Pot and makes plenty so you can even go back for more.

Plus it cooks muuuuuch quicker in the Instant Pot compared to roasting or steaming. We’re talking 5-8 mins in the pressure cooker, instead of 30 mins in the oven.

This swede mash is also super good for you, so you don’t have to worry about your healthy eating plan. It is vegan, low carb and contains 0 (that’s right, ZERO!) WW points.   • Nutmeg

How to Make Instant Pot Rutabaga Mash

Instant Pot Rutabaga Mash Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the rutabaga into 1 inch cubes
  2. Put water in the Instant Pot insert, add in the steamer basket and add rutabaga cubes.
  3. Season and add nutmeg
  4. Put the lid on, lock and turn the valve to the sealing (not venting) position.
  5. Select the manual or pressure cook button, set to high pressure for 5 mins, or up to 8 for larger cubes. When cook time is done, perform quick pressure release.
  6. Decant the Instant Pot rutabaga to a bowl and mash.
  7. Top with herbs and spices of your choice (if desired) and serve.

  • Using nutmeg makes this so warming and fragrant. It brings such a lot of flavor to the dish.
  • You could also add other spices or seasonings such as black pepper, cloves, thyme or cilantro. Consider what you are serving it with and what flavors complement which dishes.
  • Please do a quick pressure release.
  • If not vegan, feel free to add in some butter to make the mash a little creamier.

Cooking swede in the Instant Pot for approximately 5 mins is best, but do let it cook for 8 mins if the cubes are cut a little larger.

  • 2 large rutabagas
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • salt
  • 1 cup (250ml) water
