In a bold move, CMRF has pledged a staggering $1.5 million to fuel medical research in the coming year. This substantial investment will catalyze 11 groundbreaking projects, tackling critical health issues across the Canterbury region and New Zealand.
The scope of these projects is impressive: from pancreatic, blood, and breast cancer research to heart disease, mental health, Parkinson's, and child health initiatives. And this is where it gets exciting: the 2025 investment fund will support innovative approaches to these complex diseases.
"CMRF's dedication is awe-inspiring," exclaims Sue Sullivan, CMRF Chair. "Despite the decline in government and private funding, we've secured our largest investment yet, thanks to our incredible supporters and researchers."

"We're thrilled to support both emerging talent and experienced researchers," Haberfield continues. "Our supporters' generosity allows us to fund vital research, ensuring we make a tangible difference in people's lives."
As CMRF celebrates its 65th anniversary, it shows no signs of slowing down. With 38 research projects already underway and over $36 million invested to date, CMRF's commitment is unwavering. This year, they've awarded eight Major Project Grants totaling $960,000, two Emerging Researcher Fellowships worth $435,000, and a Special Project Grant of $85,000. These, along with travel grants and a PhD scholarship, bring CMRF's total investment in Canterbury health research to over $1.5 million.
The University of Otago, Christchurch, is a major beneficiary, receiving eight grants to initiate cutting-edge research and clinical trials. These projects explore the potential of vitamin C in leukemia management, improving pancreatic cancer treatment, early IBD diagnosis in children, and uncovering genetic heart disease risks.
Professor Lutz Beckert, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch, expresses his gratitude. "CMRF's support is invaluable, enabling our researchers to make a difference locally and globally."
Dr. Michael Newton-Vesty from the University of Canterbury received a Major Project Grant for his work on viral enzyme treatments for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a pressing global health concern.
Haberfield emphasizes the importance of nurturing young talent, "We must support the brightest early-career researchers to ensure a healthier future."
This year, two emerging researchers were awarded $220,000 each. Dr. George Wiggins from the University of Otago Christchurch received a fellowship for his innovative breast and ovarian cancer research. Dr. Ella Guy from the University of Canterbury was awarded a fellowship for her work on affordable at-home lung function testing for chronic respiratory diseases.
Haberfield concludes, "Research, education, and early interventions are vital to improving lives. We must continue to invest in these areas."
