  • 21 mei 2017 · A phrase from DuoLingo: That is made from wool. Está eso hecho de lana. Why is "estar" used instead of "ser"? This is a permanent characteristic ...

  • sincerely, it's a good question, but yes, in this case is Estar, Eso está hecho de lana I don't know why :(|"That is made from wool" (Affirmation) "Eso está hecho de lana" (affirmation) ¿Está eso hecho de lana? (Interrogative form) In this particular sentence, assuming that it is affirmative, both ways of saying it are correct. (if the subject goes after the verb it is always a question, and if it is an affirmation, the structure of the sentence is subject + verb + predicate) The difference is that "ser" is a permanent, inherent attribute, whereas "estar" is a transitory state. The raw material of tree is wood, it is not made from wood, therefore "el árbol es de madera". But a blouse is a manufactured product, the blouse itself is not necessarily wool, but has been made from that material (of many others that may have been chosen), that is why "la blusa está hecha (ha sido fabricada) de lana". It is correct in both cases, both expressions are used, one sentence is active "is from wool" and the other is passive "has been made of wool". In your particular sentence the verb "ser" and the verb "estar" (2 different verbs in Spanish) work as copulative verbs, means that if you omit the verb the phrase continues to have the same meaning "the blouse from wool", the verb is a bridge only. I suggest that you study the verbs "ser" and "estar" becouse there are many exceptions to its correct use. I hope I've helped! regards!
