Mexico is a place where beer and tequila reign when it comes to what alcohol people are drinking. Of course, when you go to popular bars, you’ll see all the tourists and hipsters drinking fancy co*cktails, but at your typical Mexican bar, patrons will be sipping beer, tequila, scotch, or Mezcal.

Although co*cktails aren’t the most popular in Mexico, they are a big hit in Mexican restaurants in America. Some of the most common ones are the Paloma, the michelada, the piña colada, and of course, the margarita.

Paloma

The Paloma, as well as a drink called the batanga, were invented by Don Javier Delgado Corona at a bar in Mexico called La Capilla. The Paloma is made with tequila, lime, and grapefruit soda, and the batanga is made with tequila, lime, and co*ke.

Michelada

One of the most popular mixed drinks in Mexico is the michelada, which doesn’t have any hard alcohol in it. This drink can be as simple as beer in a glass with lime juice and a salted rim, but most people are used to a more complex version of the michelada, made with tomato juice, hot sauce, and other ingredients.

Piña Colada

The Piña Colada dates back to the 1950s in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A bartender by the name of Ramón Marrero came up with this popular drink at the Caribe Hilton. He mixed rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice and created the perfect summer drink.

Margarita

No one really knows who invented the margarita, but the most prevalent story is of a man named Carlos Herrera. Supposedly he came up with the drink in 1938 in Tijuana. Years later, the margarita machine was invented in Dallas by Mariano Martinez, and the world was able to enjoy frozen margaritas.

Many other co*cktails have made their appearance in Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants including The Plaza Restaurant. Some of these drinks might sound familiar like the ranch water, the Mexican candy mule, the mangonada, and the pinarita.
