Wickes Hall History

· It was originally named “Instructional Facility #1”. Construction began in 1968 and was completed in 1969. It housed classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, the College library and College administrative offices.
· This was a $4 million building that is named for Harvey Randall Wickes, Honorary Chairman of the Wickes Corporation Board of Directors.
Currently the first floor of Wickes houses most of the student service and administrative offices.
· It houses the Samuel Marble Lecture Hall, named after the first President of SVSU.

The Campus Financial Services Center, located in 131 Wickes Hall, combines inquires for the Cashier's, Student Financial Services, and Financial Aid Offices. At the heart of the center is service to students, staff, and faculty that is convenient, timely and courteous. Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid

  • SVSU is the least expensive University in the state of Michigan.
  • Through this office, students can obtain information on numerous scholarships available, as well as Financial Aid packages.
  • Scholarships through this office are for all students, not just incoming freshmen.
  • Approximately 82% of students receive some form of financial aid or scholarship at SVSU.
  • Over 150 different kinds of scholarships are awarded from SVSU.
  • There are four types of Financial Aid: Scholarships, Grants, Work Study, and Loans.

Admissions Office

  • This office presents to prospective students an overall idea of what SVSU offers academically and socially through a counseling appointment and a tour of campus. Undergraduate applications are processed through this office.
  • The average incoming freshman has a:
    • 3.3 High School GPA & a 22 composite ACT score (about an 1100 -1120 SAT score) (of course we accept students with lower scores but this is our average)
  • There is never a “deadline” to apply, but students are encouraged to apply in the fall of their junior year, so that they are informed if they qualify for scholarships during their senior year.
  • Admissions offers scholarships to incoming Freshman based on GPA & ACT score:
    • President’s Scholarship (full tuition and fees for 4 years) – Eligible to compete if 3.9 GPA and a 1270 SATORa 1350 SATOR ​1st or second in their class
    • Founder's Scholarship ($5,000/year for 4 years) - Qualify if a student has aminimum of a 3.6 GPA and a 1200 SAT
    • Dean’s Scholarship ($4,000/year for 4 years) – Qualify if a student has a minimum ofa 3.0 GPA and a 1120 SAT.
    • Cardinal Scholarship ($3,000/year for 4 years)– Qualify if a student has a minimum of a3.0 GPA and 1060SAT.
    • University Scholarship (2,000/year for 4 years)- Qualify if a student has a minimum 3.0 GPS and 900 SATORa 3.7 GPA

Registrars Office

  • This office holds all of the current students’ academic records
  • They also handle updating records (i.e. change of address/name or changes in major/minor)
  • They print off official copies of student transcripts for $5.00
  • Almost all of registration takes place online at Cardinal Direct, but students can add or drop classes by coming in person.

Academic Advising Office

  • Advisors in this office review course requirements needed to complete a degree (majors and minors).
  • Students may discuss change of major with an advisor (both faculty and peeer)
  • The office coordinates orientation/basic skills testing programs, the College Success Program for new freshmen, the University Foundations Scholars program, and Freshman & Transfer Orientation Programs.
  • Students may meet with academic advisors throughout their time spent at the University, but they are encouraged to meet with advisors within their academic departments for curriculum, career and graduate school information once a semester.

Samuel Marble Lecture Hall

  • Named after the first President of Saginaw Valley College, Dr. Samuel Marble
  • One of the biggest lecture halls on campus; seating for180 students
  • Average class size for this lecture hall is 60 students, which is usually for freshmen/general education courses (biology, math, chemistry, psychology.)

Career Services

  • Career Services offers a variety of services to help students and alumni plan and begin their careers.
  • They can give advice on how to write and format: resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, and portfolios. They also give assistance and advice about interviewing and networking skills, and websites and paths to find a career.
    • Career aptitude assessments & Career Advising – These help students select a major that matches their interests and abilities.
    • Focus Program- Online assessment that offers detailed information on hundreds of career paths
    • Student Employment Program (On-campus jobs, Co-ops, and Internships) – Students can upload resumes, cover letters, and other documents to the Cardinal Career Network and search hundreds of jobs, on and off campus easily.
    • General Career Management (Interview skills and Resume compilation). Tutorials are available online and workshops are offered for students who need assistance.
  • Employment fairs are often held twice a semester for students.

Multicultural Services

  • The office, and its services, are open to all students, not just minority.
  • Overview: The Office of Multicultural Services provides meaningful services to assist in the transition, retention and graduation of SVSU students. We strive to enhance the college experience by providing services and programs that assist in the continued growth of our minority student population. We maintain a close relationship with departments, organizations, faculty and staff to promote a culturally diverse campus.
  • Services to Students include: a New Study & Tutoring Program, Academic Advising, Unofficial Degree Audits, the P.A.S.S Mentoring Program (Plan of Action for Student Success-a support system to help students transition into college life with one-on-one interaction with upperclassmen mentors), and Cultural Awareness Programs.
  • Primary goal is to provide a support system that will encourage personal growth and aid in the development of independence and achievement of academic excellence.
  • Minority students comprise approximately 10% of SVSU’s population

Disability Services

Disability services can be used by all persons coping with a mobility impairment, as well as those who are coping with a learning disability, psychological, emotional and or other disability related issues. The office will provide accommodations in an attempt to level the educational playing field if you will. If you think you may be dealing with a disability related issues feel free to stop in to the office and speak with someone.

Office of International Programs

  • This office provides several areas of service to SVSU, including Study Abroad, Faculty Lead Programs, the English Language Program, International Student recruitment/admissions as well as services to assist international students at SVSU.

International Admissions

  • About 10% of SVSU's student population are international students. Learning, living and interacting with an international community enhances the college experience andworkplace preparation for everyone.
  • International students from 80 different countries have taken classes at SVSU

Study Abroad

  • (2015) SVSU sent 188 students abroad, the most for any single year for SVSU.
  • Programs last from a few weeks to an entire year!
  • This is very popular at SVSU: Students can choose from virtually any country to study in (i.e. Australia, Austria, England, Ireland, Spain, Mexico, Italy, Japan, and more.)
  • Study Abroad Credits transfer over and financial aid and scholarships are available.
  • In order to study abroad, students must have completed at least one semester at SVSU and maintained a GPA of at least 2.5, but no foreign language is required for programs and most counties.
  • Many scholarships are available, including through Student Association.
  • There areopportunitiesfor any major or program.
