Child’s Play: Chucky’s Child Explained (2024)

While Child's Play villain Chucky began life as a lone serial killer turned into a doll, by Seed of Chucky, he somehow had both a wife and child. The Child's Play franchise has been a bit of a creative whirlwind at times, which is odd in a sense, as every film has been written by the same man: creator Don Mancini. Yet, while the first three Child's Play movies are basically straightforward slasher films with a little levity here and there, Bride and Seed of Chucky are so comedic they border on outright farce. Then Curse of Chucky took things back in a scary direction, only to kind of split the difference between horror and comedy with Cult of Chucky.

Whatever the method to Mancini's creative madness is, it seems to be working, with Universal happy to stay in the Child's Play business for the long haul. A Child's Play TV series following on from Cult of Chucky is headed to Syfy in 2020, and Mancini has said that plans are in place for further movie sequels starring Chucky.

Despite the enduring popularity of Child's Play though, easily its most contentious entry is 2004's Seed of Chucky, the last Chucky movie to date to play in theaters. Seed took the comedy from Bride and ramped it up to 11, and as the title implies, introduced offspring for Chucky.

Bride of Chucky: Chucky Gets Tiffany Pregnant

Child’s Play: Chucky’s Child Explained (1)

As the title makes clear, Bride of Chucky introduces Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), an ex-girlfriend of Chucky's who resurrects him using voodoo. After she angers him, Chucky kills Tiffany, and transfers her soul into a female doll. The duo then goes on a cross-country rampage, during which they have sex. It's not clear how exactly this works from a biological standpoint, although since both dolls are inhabited by human souls, one assumes that's what allows them to physically procreate. At the end of Bride of Chucky, Tiffany gives birth.

Seed of Chucky: The Introduction of Glen and Glenda

Child’s Play: Chucky’s Child Explained (2)

It's revealed that after Bride of Chucky, Chucky and Tiffany's child was found by an abusive ventriloquist, and spent several years with him. The child then ran off to Hollywood, found Chucky and Tiffany's dolls, and resurrected them once again. The child isn't "anatomically correct," so Chucky and Tiffany bicker over its gender. Chucky dubs his "son" Glen, and Tiffany dubs her daughter "Glenda." It becomes clear that Glen and Glenda are either two separate personalities or two distinct souls somehow inhabiting the same body. Viewed through a present-day lens, it also seems like a possible stand-in for real-life gender confusion.

Seed of Chucky: Glen and Glenda Become Actual Twins

Child’s Play: Chucky’s Child Explained (3)

The battle between the Glen and Glenda personas continues, with Glen being a nice boy that doesn't like violence, and Glenda being a sad*stic killer like her parents. Eventually, Tiffany decides to give up killing to raise her child, but Chucky refuses. The two settle on a plan to transfer their souls into human bodies, and Glen and Glenda into two separate twins, created by impregnating actress Jennifer Tilly with Chucky's sperm in a weird bit of meta humor. Chucky opts to remain a doll, but is killed by Glen after attacking Tiffany. Tiffany, Glen, and Glenda successfully posses Tilly and her twins, but are shown to struggle with adjusting to a normal life. Glen and Glenda haven't been seen in a Child's Play film since, but Don Mancini has implied they might one day return.
