"I am Chucky, the killer doll, and I dig it!"
—Chucky's most famous quote[src]

Charles Lee "Chucky" Ray (May 1, 1958 – November 9, 1988; later resurrected) is an infamous serial killer formerly based in Chicago, known as The Lakeshore Strangler, who managed to transfer his soul into a Good Guy doll shortly before his death. In the years following, Chucky continued his killings in his doll body, first targeting young Andy Barclay and his mother, Karen Barclay. After being defeated by Andy several times, Chucky was tracked down by his former lover, Tiffany Valentine, who he soon murdered and transferred her soul into a doll body of her own. Their rekindled relationship also resulted in the birth of their child GiGi, later known as Glen and Glenda Tilly.

Years later, Chucky continued to work with Tiffany to target those who wronged him in the past, targeting Nica Pierce and her family, leaving her the sole survivor. He later managed to track her down at Harrogate Psychiatric Hospital and used a voodoo spell to split his soul into multiple dolls, also putting one piece into Nica and possessing her. In the growing army of Chucky dolls, this Chucky became known as Chucky Prime, alluding to his status as the original. Ultimately, the doll army would fall apart altogether, leading Chucky to become trapped in Nica's body as it was amputated and taken hostage by TIffany to keep him at bay. Following an intense exorcism, Chucky was finally removed from Nica's body, only to be later murdered by Lexy Cross and subsequently, and accidently, resurrected by Tiffany.

Realising he was now trapped in a single dying vessel due to the botched exorcism, Chucky infiltrated the White House, preying on the mourning first family, in order to offer Damballa enough human sacrifices in a corrupted setting. However, realising this would not work, Chucky decided to execute as many people as possible, sending nukes throughout the globe and ultimately resulting in his death, trapping him in the White House as a ghost.

Biography

Early life

Charles Lee Ray was born on May 1, 1958 in the suburbs of Hackensack, New Jersey to Peter and Elizabeth Ray. Growing up, Ray would have a loving and peaceful upbringing, being spoiled by his parents and receiving whatever he desired. However, Charles would still grow up displaying continuously erratic behaviour.

Chucky (1)

On the night of May 1, 1965, Charles' seventh birthday, after a day of partying with friends and eating cake, Ray was put to bed by his parents but was woken up by the sound of struggling from his living room. Upon descending the stairs, he witnessed his father being brutally stabbed by the then-wanted serial killer, the Hackensack Slasher. His mother quickly appeared and brought him upstairs, hiding with him in a nearby closet. In a turn of events, Charles ended up murdering his mother himself and being found by the Slasher, who seemed proud of the young boy's work, leaving him alive.[1]

Following his parents' deaths, Charles would be put under the care of local therapist, Dr. Amanda Mixter, who shared his devious ambitions and aspired to stamp out any potential innocence left in him, truly forming him into a ruthless serial killer.[2]

Chucky (2)

By 1972, a 14-year-old Charles had been placed in Burlington County Home for Wayward Boys, growing up around other troubled youth. It was here that he met and began mentoring a young boy named Eddie Caputo, showing him the ropes of killing. He spent a few years in the boys home before, one day, he was yelled at by the janitor for leaving dirty shoe marks on the floor, enraging him. This led Charles to slit the janitor's throat and cut off his hand, jamming a hook into his wrist to play a game of Peter Pan with the other boys, labelling him Captain Hook. After showing the corpse to his young friends, the majority of them ran in fear except for Eddie, who simply poked the corpse with a nearby stick with Charles looking on, proud. Later that night, after the police had arrived to investigate, Charles bid Eddie goodbye before making his escape, gifting him the janitor's severed hand in the process.[3]

Years as the Lakeshore Strangler (1986-1988)

Meeting Tiffany Valentine

"I'm Tiffany."
"I'm Charles."
"Know what, Charles? You should be Chucky."
"Know what, Tiff? You should be blonde.

Chucky (3)

As he grew into his adult years, Ray continued his killings everywhere he went. One night in 1986, Ray set out on his own to a local nightclub in Hackensack where he quickly met a young woman named Delilah, who he immediately took an interest in after watching her be rough with her boyfriend, Dwayne. He approached her and offered her a cigarette before getting intimate with her and promising that he was nothing like other men, being willing to her offer her a more "violent" night like she would prefer. Eventually, the pair came across another young woman sitting by herself, introducing themselves and giving her the chance to sleep with them. The three went back to Hotel Hackensack together and Delilah began making out with the woman as Charles watched. After sometime, he eventually approached them with a large kitchen knife, grabbing the woman by the hair and holding it to her face. However, after she only seemed more excited by the thought of him killing, Charles decided to stab Delilah instead, brutally murdering her alongside the woman. Afterward, the two began making out, with the woman introducing herself as Tiffany and Charles introducing himself as well, suggesting that she go blonde.[4]

Building a Life

Chucky (4)

Following their meeting, Charles and Tiffany would start a committed relationship, murdering people together as a duo and wishing to start a life together. The next year, in 1987, the couple would meet with a car salesman in Hackensack, interested in purchasing a brand new vehicle. The salesman told them all about the specs of the car, revealing it to be perfect for the growing family with plenty of room for up to six people. After they agreed to take it and Charles offered up a cheque as payment, the salesman reluctantly told them of a past incident with the car, resulting in a young couple being brutally decapitated. Only having their interest peaked further, the two still agreed to take the car but never intended on paying the salesman. Just as Charles began distracting him, Tiffany approached him from behind and slashed his throat with her serrated nail file, splashing the front window with his blood. The couple entered their brand new vehicle and just before driving off, Tiffany noticed Charles reading from a book titled The Ultimate Book of Voodoo, asking what it was only for Charles to quickly shut her down, simply labelling it as a hobby.[5]

Chucky (5)

In 1988, Charles and Tiffany finally left Hackensack and relocated to Chicago, starting anew. The couple purchased their first apartment together, deeming it a suitable fit for their first co-owned place. Tiffany immediately began throwing out suggestions for improvements that could have been made, such as a rug and some wallpaper. After agreeing, Charles suddenly suggested that they should order a pizza for the first time in the new city, exciting Tiffany. Later, after the pizza boy arrived with their food, the two brutally murdered him and got intimate with each other while still eating the pizza, expressing their like for deep dish but still missing New Jersey pizza. All the while, the corpse of the pizza boy lay bleeding out in their bathroom as the two made out with one another.[6] It was during this time in Chicago that Charles would become the high-profile serial killer known as The Lakeshore Strangler, earning the attention of homicide detective, Mike Norris, and murdering approximately twenty-two individuals, including Vivian Van Pelt.[7] Around this time, Ray would also come into contact with a voodoo doctor named Dr. Death, who would provide him with various ritualistic objects.[8]

Meeting the Pierces

"She has her her mother's eyes."
—Charles about Barb Pierce upon meeting the family.[src]
Chucky (6)

Later that year, unbeknownst to Tiffany, Charles became acquainted with the Pierce family through a mutual friend in Chicago. On a summers day, during a cookout, he was introduced to Daniel Pierce, his pregnant wife, Sarah Pierce, and their young daughter, Barb Pierce, stating how the young girl had her mother's eyes. Over time, Charles became infatuated with Sarah, growing into an obsessive love for the woman and wanting her all to himself. During this obsession, Charles would grow noticeably distant from Tiffany, preferring to murder by himself and actively avoid spending time with her.[6] One night, Charles ended up subduing Daniel on his way home from work and brutally drowned the man, leaving Sarah a widow but allowing Charles to continue stalking her. At his funeral, Sarah noticed him staring and had her suspicions. At a later point, he managed to kidnap her completely, holding her hostage within an abandoned warehouse and frequently bringing her sunflowers as a romantic gesture.[9]

Death

"Oh, god, I'm dying. You hear that you son of a bitch?! I'm gonna get you for it! I'm gonna get you, and I'm gonna get Eddie, no matter what!"
—Charles Lee Ray's dying words to Mike Norris.[src]
Chucky (7)

On the night of November 9, 1988, Charles would track down a woman by himself and bring him back to his and Tiffany's apartment, brutally murdering her in their bedroom. Just then, Tiffany stormed into the bedroom, feeling betrayed due to Charles' new habit of murdering by himself rather than working with her as a team. Tired of hearing her complain to him, Charles only took off his bloody apron and washed his hands in the kitchen sink as she continued to accuse him of never spending time with her anymore. Ignoring her, Charles threw on his large trench coat and instructed Tiffany to not wait up for him, leaving her behind and alone in the apartment.[6] Unbeknownst to him, Tiffany, now a jealous rage, notified Detective Norris of his approximate location.[10] In the meantime, Charles returned to the warehouse to visit the still-captive Sarah.

Chucky (8)

Before entering the warehouse, Charles seemingly called Eddie Caputo to wait for him outside in case they needed a quick getaway. He approached the restrained woman and proudly showed her a new batch of sunflowers he had picked out for her, removing the gag in her mouth in order to hear her opinion. After taking a shaky breath, she complimented them and thanked him for thinking of her. As he attempted to leave to pick up Barb from, a seemingly very late, daycare, Sarah stopped him and offered some alone time between them, however, he expressed his want for family time, believing himself to be a part of their family. However, she ultimately broke down and explained how his infatuation for them was not love, causing him to grow angry, but before he could anything, police sirens suddenly began in the streets outside. Sarah, now confident she would live, began chastising Charles for his actions, causing him to grow even more angry and hold a knife to her pregnant stomach, stabbing down and causing the baby to be paralysed from the waist down. Fully believing it was Sarah who alerted the police and not Tiffany, Charles ran from the crime scene and toward his getaway car.[9]

Chucky (9)

On his way out onto the street, Charles was suddenly spotted by Detective Norris and chased down the street while engaging in a gunfight, being shot several times. Norris also alerted other nearby officers of Ray's location, causing him to become surrounded. This lead to him finally being cornered outside of the entrance to Playland Toys which he entered and attempted to hide inside of, still being relentlessly pursued by Norris. While hiding behind some nearby Good Guy dolls, Charles attempted to get a shot off on Norris, only to be shot in the chest by the detective instead. Now starting to succumb to his wounds, Ray fell back and began yelling out to Norris, promising to get revenge on him for what he had done. Recalling his knowledge of voodoo, Ray located a vessel, a Good Guy doll, and began chanting a ritual, causing a thunderstorm to approach outside. As Charles Lee Ray finally died, he successfully managed to transfer his soul into the doll, possessing it and leaving his corpse behind for Norris to discover, making him and the public believe that The Lakeshore Strangler had been brought to justice.[8]

First Doll Killings (1988)

Purchased by the Barclays

"Anything else?"
"Yes. He said Aunt Maggie was a real bitch and got what she deserved."
"How can you say something so horrible?"
"I didn't say it, Chucky did.
"
Karen Barclay and Andy Barclay.[src]
Chucky (10)

In the raid on the toy store, the doll containing Ray's soul was lost and eventually discovered by a nearby vagrant, who took the doll into his possession to sell for cash. The next day, a woman named Karen Barclay and her friend, Maggie Peterson, approached the vagrant and offered him money for it to give to Karen's son, Andy, for his birthday. After some aggressive negotiating, Karen finally settled on paying thirty dollars for the doll. She then took it back into work at Carson Pirie Scott & Co., excited to bring the demonic doll home to surprise Andy. After getting home, Karen handed an excited Andy the wrapped Good Guy box and watched as the young boy displayed his excitement at the sight of a Good Guy doll. Upon asking how it worked, Karen watched as Andy asked the doll it's name, to which it replied that it's name was "Chucky", and that Andy was his new friend to the end. Andy then hugged his mother as a thank you as Chucky watched the two eerily.

Chucky (11)

That night, while Karen worked an extra shift, Andy was babysat by his Aunt Maggie, who helped herself to leftover birthday cake in the kitchen as Andy played with Chucky and a Good Guy construction set in the living room. As a news report came on the television reporting that Eddie had managed to escape police custody earlier that night and gone into hiding, Chucky suddenly turned his head to watch which caught the attention of Andy, causing him to snap back into position and utter a playful phrase. Maggie then instructed Andy to start getting ready for bed but before he could, Chucky whispered a request into his ear. Andy then explained to Maggie that Chucky wanted to watch the 9 o'clock news to get more information on Eddie Caputo. However, Maggie dismissed the request and lifted both Andy and Chucky to bed herself and left him to brush his teeth as she cleaned up dishes. During this time, Chucky managed to sneak back into the living room undetected and switched the news back on, startling her.

Chucky (12)

Annoyed by a seemingly harmless prank, Maggie grabbed Chucky and confronted Andy in the bathroom, believing him to have placed the doll there in an attempt to stay awake past his bedtime. Despite Andy declaring his innocence, Maggie still shut him down and tucked him into bed alongside Chucky before leaving him to get some sleep. Andy sadly told Chucky that he knew Maggie would be angry at his trick before giving him a kiss on the cheek and going to sleep. As he slept, Chucky crept out of the bedroom and stalked Maggie from the shadows, who was startled at first and called out Andy's name, believing the small figure to be him. Chucky then quietly moved a chair next to a door and spilled a jar of flower to mess with Maggie's head, who was even more startled once Karen called on the phone to check in on Andy. As the call calmed Maggie's nerves, Chucky swiftly grabbed a nearby hammer from Andy's playset and climbed onto the counter behind her. As she turned, Chucky slammed the hammer into her Maggie's forehead with enough force that she flew backward and fell out of a nearby window, falling to her death on the streets below.

Chucky (13)

After the police were called upon the discovery of Maggie's corpse, they immediately began an investigation on the Barclay's apartment and were shocked when Karen returned home from work, worried sick about her son. After she made sure he was alright and was informed of Maggie's death, Detective Norris, the lead on the Charles Lee Ray case, noticed footprints in the flour spilled on the bench, clearly being child-sized. After Andy ran up to them, Karen told him to run off to bed, only for Norris to ask to see the bottom of his shoes, which resembled the pattern in the footprints. Upon returning to bed, Andy asked Chucky, who sat across from him, about the importance of his sneakers, before noticing the same pattern on Chucky's sneakers. An excited Andy then ran back to Norris and told him that Chucky was the one who was walking on the kitchen counter, making the police think Andy was more mentally unwell than they thought. After they left, Chucky and Andy spoke to each other in Andy's room about Chucky's true identity as Charles Lee Ray, catching the attention of a worried Karen, who asked Andy what the pair would talk about. Once Andy began saying that Maggie had gotten what she deserved, Karen yelled at him that Chucky was just a doll and to stop making up stories, which Andy complied just to stop being yelled at. Settling down, Karen placed Andy into bed and worriedly put the doll next to him.

Getting Revenge

"Hi, I'm Chucky, and I'm your friend to the end! Hi de ho! Ha ha ha!"
"Mommy! He's doing it on purpose! He told me to never tell about him or he'd kill me!
"
—Chucky makes Andy look unstable.[src]
Chucky (14)

The next day, after Andy was dropped off at school by Karen, Chucky influenced the young boy to ditch that day and catch the subway to a rougher part of town, heading toward one of Charles Lee Ray's old safe houses where Eddie Caputo had set up shop since his latest escape. Shortly after arriving, Andy left Chucky on a nearby chair to go off to the toilet. Seeing this chance, Chucky quickly leapt from the chair and ran toward the house, quietly opening the front door and making his way inside as Eddie lay sleeping in the living room. He then entered the kitchen and opened the creaky stove, startling Eddie, and switching on the gas and removing the gas line. Now wary of an intruder, Eddie began patrolling the house but Chucky managed to make a quiet escape and head back outside toward Andy, who was looking for him. Just then, Eddie shot his gun into the kitchen, catching light next to the exposed gas and causing the house to explode completely, brutally killing Eddie as revenge.

Chucky (15)

Shortly after, both Andy and Chucky were found by the police and brought back to the precinct, which Karen arrived at as soon as they called her. After explaining things to her and bringing her into the room with Andy and Chucky, Karen explained to the former that unless he began telling the truth about these deaths, he would be taken away into psychiatric evaluation. Andy then desperately attempted to get Chucky to reveal the truth to everyone, only to be ignored and taunted by the doll's robotic reply. A psychiatrist named Dr. Ardmore then took Andy into a psychiatric facility and Chucky returned home with a devastated Karen. After attempting to make the doll talk to her, Karen quickly came to her senses and went to the kitchen for a glass of water, noticing the Good Guy box in the corner of the room. Upon inspecting it, she noticed that the included batteries were still in the box. Now shaken, she approached Chucky and slowly checked his back for batteries and was horrified to discover it empty. The doll then suddenly turned it's head around to stare at her and aggressively spoke before being thrown to the ground. Now agitated, Karen lit the fireplace and threatened to burn Chucky if he did not speak, causing him to eerily spring to life and attack her, biting her in the process. After she threw him across the room, Chucky took his chance and escaped out of the front door and into the streets of Chicago.

Chucky (16)

Eventually, Chucky found his way into the police cruiser of Detective Norris and stalked him from the backseat as he studied Charles Lee Ray's case file, now suspicious of foul play being involved in the Barclay's case. As Norris was driving, Chucky suddenly lunged at him and wrapped a cord around his neck and the headrest of his seat, taunting him as he strangled him and as the car swerved through the streets. Panicking, Norris managed to rip a piece of plastic flesh from Chucky's face, causing him severe pain and forcing him to let go of the wire. Now on the floor of the car, the demonic doll suddenly began stabbing through Norris' seat with a kitchen knife, still causing the car to swerve as he attempted to avoid being stabbed. After some time, Chucky finally crawled underneath the seat and pushed on the pedals, causing Norris to finally crash and tip the car on it's head. Now at somewhat of an advantage, Chucky ran out from the crash and continued stabbing at Norris from the broken windows, avoiding gunshots in the process. However, before he could land a killing blow, Norris finally landed a shot directly into Chucky's chest, sending him flying backward but allowing him to escape.

Chucky (17)

The following morning, Chucky visited Dr. Death, also known as John Bishop, and showed off his new body that Bishop's own voodoo spells granted him. However, despite the benefit he believed he had of being invincible, Chucky explained that after Norris had shot him, he felt that pain and even bled from his wound. Still shaken from seeing Ray again, Bishop explained that the longer he remained in the doll body, the more human the doll would become, causing him to bleed. He then cursed Chucky out, accusing him of being evil and using the magic provided by voodoo for his own selfish gain. Angered and still desperate for answers, Chucky grabbed a nearby voodoo doll bound to Bishop and began snapping his limbs, torturing him for answers. After some time, Bishop painfully explained that in order to escape his fate, Chucky would have to transfer his soul into the body of the first human he revealed himself to, that being Andy. Excited at the thought of being young again, Chucky began to leave the room, but not before stabbing the voodoo doll in the heart, finally killing Bishop.

Final Confrontation

Chucky (18)

Seeking to transfer his soul into Andy's body, Chucky tracked down and infiltrated the psychiatric facility in which he was being held and got up to his floor by navigating the fire escape. He then investigated the office and noticed the key to Andy's room and the room number, allowing him easy to access to his target. After unlocking the door, Chucky noticed what appeared to be Andy hiding under the covers. He slowly stalked approached the bed a and jumped on top, only to reveal the figure to be a pillow Andy had placed under the covers before escaping from the room. However, Andy was quickly noticed by Dr. Ardmore, who grabbed him and restrained him in a nearby operating room. Chucky managed to get close to them and stabbed Ardmore before strapping an electric shock device to his head, giving him a violent electric shock therapy session, completely frying his brain and killing him. A horrified Andy only watched on before being able to escape from the room, being followed closely by the demon doll.

Chucky (19)

Andy fled to the one place he felt safe, Karen's apartment. As he prepared to hide within the dark apartment, Chucky resumed his position as an inanimate doll and made his way up the building's elevator, appearing to simply be left by a child. He then descended down the chimney of the apartment, hoping to catch Andy off guard, and began stalking the halls with his knife in hand. He eventually jumped out on the young boy, who was holding a baseball bat and attempted to hit Chucky, being unsuccessful and running away into the kitchen. Now armed with a baseball bat, Chucky was able to quickly come upon Andy hiding beside the kitchen counter, bashing him over the head and knocking him out. With his victim incapacitated, Chucky began the reciting the spell to transfer his soul into Andy's body, however, he began panicking upon hearing Karen and Norris quickly approaching the apartment. Karen was then able to get there in time and pull Chucky off of Andy, which resulted in him biting her neck in anger. However, Norris quickly grabbed and threw him across the room, allowing him to stab Norris in the leg and quickly hide further within the apartment.

Chucky (20)

As Karen tended to Andy, Norris patrolled the apartment for any sign of Chucky, only for the demon doll to suddenly charge at him with the baseball bat, hitting him in the stomach and head. However, before he could deliver the finishing blow, Karen appeared in the door and shot Chucky in the stomach. However, her gun suddenly jammed and Chucky was able to charge at her as well, pushing her to the ground and biting her neck. She was then able to push him back and force him into the fireplace, locking him in with the cover. She then called for Andy to bring her a match, which he did, and the pair lit it. Seeing how close to death he was, Chucky began pleading with Andy, explaining that they were supposed to be friends to the end. However, Andy did not give into the doll's mind games and dropped the lit match into the fireplace, setting Chucky aflame and causing him to scream in pain. Eventually, after an attempt to put himself out, a charred Chucky suddenly lay limp on the floor, appear to have died from his burns.

Chucky (21)

Karen and Andy then returned to the bedroom to treat Norris' wounds, not realising Chucky was still alive and had hidden himself in the shadows. As Andy ran through the apartment to locate a first aid kit, Chucky tripped the boy up and menacingly approached him with a melted knife. Andy then ran back to the bedroom and Karen attempted to hold the door closed as Chucky bashed into it and stuck his arms through, begging her to give him Andy to save his soul. He then suddenly abandoned the door and ran to another one of the room's entrances, continuing to fight with Karen to rip the door open. After a chase, Chucky managed to corner both of them in the hallway and slowly approached them, only to have his head shot off by Karen, falling to the floor and receiving several more gunshots into his charred body. Afterward, Norris' partner, Jack Santos appeared on the scene and expressed disbelief in the trio's story. Just then, a headless Chucky had snuck into the vents and grabbed Santos by the neck, only to be ripped off of him by Karen and thrown across the room. Norris then raised his gun and shot Chucky directly in the heart, finally killing him.[8]

The Demon Doll Returns (1990)

Accidental Resurrection

"Is this what you call good news?"
"No, I'm getting to that, sir. Our biggest problem has been the rumors. A lot of people are saying that some joker here at the company must have tampered with the doll's voice cassette, you know, "Hi, I'm Chucky, I'm the Lakeshore Strangler, now I'm gonna kill you..." Well it's something like that, but the good news, Mr. Sullivan, is that now we've got the doll.
"
Haskell Sullivan and Mattson discuss Chucky.[src]
Chucky (22)

Approximately two years after the events with the Barclays, and after Karen was placed under psychiatric evaluation due to her insistence on Chucky's consciousness, Chucky's charred corpse was recovered by Play Pals Toys, the company behind the creation of the Good Guy dolls. His casing was completely ripped from it's foundation and replaced with fresh parts, including eyes, limbs, and paint. However, unbeknownst to the company, Charles Lee Ray's dormant soul still haunted the doll. Eventually, company CEO, Haskell Sullivan, arrived to monitor the progress on the doll and watched as they attempted to place the doll's new eyes into it's head. However, the machine ended up malfunctioning and sent an electric shock throughout the room, accidently resurrecting the soul of Charles Lee Ray and killing the employees in the room as it did. After witnessing the carnage, Sullivan ordered the doll to be disposed of, unaware that Chucky was watching him from the floor.

Personality

Charles Lee Ray, better known as Chucky, may be pure evil through and through. His major character traits include being psychotic, murderous, hateful, vindictive, and sociopathic. Ever since his childhood, Chucky seemed to always have psychotic and murderous tendencies, enjoying using a knife to cut his sixth birthday cake and even enjoying murdering his own mother. This is further shown throughout his countless murders throughout his years as a killer doll, revelling in all of them. However, Chucky also has a strong, over-the-top sense of humor, joking and quipping throughout his murders that granted him a recognisable identity. He is also immensely vindictive individual, having no issue using murder and torture as methods of revenge, even on those that he may have cared about, as seen when he sought revenge on his ex-girlfriend, Tiffany, by murdering her.

Alongside his hateful, murderous hateful side, Chucky has shown some caring tendencies, such as to his child, GiGi, and even, at times, his girlfriend/fiancée/wife-sometimes, Tiffany. He came to be very accepting of his child's gender identity, also being proud of the way Glen and Glenda had turned out upon meeting them, particularly Glenda. Chucky has had a soft spot for Tiffany Valentine, ever since they first met, being excited to be reunited with her at first, being ready to start a family with her, and even stopping another version of him from killing her, having got used to having her around. However, their relationship can become very vindictive on both ends, with both of them having betrayed and killed each other several times, mostly for selfish reasons on Chucky's part.
