Seats in the Shade at Red Sox Early Afternoon Games
At the start of a 1:35 p.m. game, the sun is high above home plate. The center and right field bleachers, along with the seats atop the Green Monster, will experience particularly intense sunlight. In fact, shade seekers should avoid outfield sections BL34-BL43 entirely. Seats here are exposed to the sun regardless of the game time.
The best hope for shade during a day game is in the infield grandstand. Fenway’s old-fashioned jewel box design provides natural shade as grandstand seats are located directly under the upper deck. Just make sure not to get an obstructed view or a seat behind a column! Loge Box seats behind home plate, from sections LB125-LB155, are far enough from the field to provide protection from the sun. Field Box seats behind home plate and on the 3rd base line will start the game in the sun but may become shaded later in the afternoon. Shade will move from back to front, so fans sitting in the first row next to the field will become shaded last.

Seats in the Shade at Red Sox Late Afternoon Games
For 4:10 p.m. games, the sun is behind 3rd base at the first pitch. It gradually moves toward the left field foul pole as it sets. Fans behind home plate and on the 3rd base side in Grandstand, Field Box, or Loge Box seats are in the shade, with their backs to the sun.
The sunniest seats are in the outfield bleachers. Seats along the 1st baseline will still be exposed to sunlight for late afternoon games. While the grandstand seats offer some protection, the 1st base line is the “sunny side” of the park, and fans here are more likely to have the sun in their eyes as it sets.

Seats in the Shade at Red Sox Evening Games
In the summer months, the sun typically sets in Boston after 8:00 p.m., leaving at least an hour of sunlight for evening games. The outfield bleachers remain sunny for the longest duration. Seats atop the Green Monster are also exposed but become shaded earlier than the bleachers. Seats far down the 1st base line near the right field foul pole will face the sun as it begins to set. However, those seated on the 3rd base line or around home plate will be comfortably shaded, with the sun positioned at their backs.
