Why Geralt Couldn't Beat Vilgefortz In Their Fight (But Liam Hemsworth Can Win The Rematch) (2024)

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for The Witcher season 3, part 2, as well as for Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher novels.

Summary

  • Geralt is easily defeated by Vilgefortz in The Witcher season 3, highlighting the power disparity between the two characters.
  • Vilgefortz's story is not over yet, suggesting that he will continue to play a significant role in future seasons of The Witcher.
  • A rematch between Geralt and Vilgefortz is expected to happen in The Witcher based on The Lady of the Lake, and in that rematch, Geralt ultimately defeats Vilgefortz.

Geralt was easily defeated by Vilgefortz in The Witcher season 3, raising the question of whether Liam Hemsworth’s version of the Witcher will win the rematch against the mage. The Witcher season 3, part 1 revealed that Vilgefortz had been working for the White Flame all along, setting up the Thanedd coup for part 2. The Witcher season 3, episode 6 covered the mages’ civil war and delivered some of the best action sequences of the season. This includes the Geralt vs. Vilgefortz fight.

The Witcher season 3’s ending sees Henry Cavill’s Geralt recovering from the injuries he suffered during the duel. The fact that The Witcher season 3, episode 8 was Henry Cavill’s final is bittersweet, as this version of the character will not get a rematch against Vilgefortz. That said, Vilgefortz’s story in The Witcher is not over yet.

Vilgefortz Is Far More Powerful Than Geralt: How He Easily Beats Him

Vilgefortz is more powerful than Geralt, which becomes clear during their fight during The Witcher season 3, episode 6. That said, whether Vilgefortz used any magic during his duel with the Witcher is an interesting question that does not have a definitive answer. The Witcher season 3’s Vilgefortz vs. Geralt duel played out very similarly from Time of Contempt, during which Vilgefortz easily beat the Witcher using nothing but a staff. Both in the show and the book, Vilgefortz does not use any visible magic to fight Geralt. However, the White Wolf should be the better fighter, suggesting that magic could have been involved.

One popular theory is that Vilgefortz used magic to move faster during his first fight against Geralt, which is why he could block and counter all of the Witcher’s moves. Either way, Geralt barely posed any threat to Vilgefortz, who had the upper hand during their entire duel. Geralt had personal stakes during this fight – he wanted to save Ciri from Vilgefortz – which only made the Witcher’s defeat worse. Vilgefortz could have killed Geralt after their duel but chose to spare the Witcher’s life as a twisted way to celebrate his victory. However, by letting Geralt live, Vilgefortz set the stage for a rematch between the two of them.

Geralt vs. Vilgefortz's Rematch: When It Happens & Who Wins

Why Geralt Couldn't Beat Vilgefortz In Their Fight (But Liam Hemsworth Can Win The Rematch) (2)

There will be another Geralt vs. Vilgefortz in The Witcher, although it will likely not happen in The Witcher season 4. Going with the novels’ chronology, The Witcher season 4 should cover the events of Baptism of Fire and perhaps parts of The Tower of the Swallow. The Tower of the Swallow covers Yennefer’s search for Vilgefortz, which is something that may happen in The Witcher season 4 based on how season 3 ended. Vilgefortz eventually captures and tortures Yennefer to try to discover Geralt and Ciri’s location. This leads into The Lady of the Lake, the final of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher novels.

The Geralt vs. Vilgefortz rematch happens in The Lady of the Lake. This time, Yennefer was involved in the fight. Regis, a character that has yet to be introduced in The Witcher, was also involved. However, the situtation eventually came down to a duel between Geralt and Vilgefortz. After almost losing yet another fight against the mage, Geralt took advantage of an illusion that was cast on Vilgefortz to change the course of the battle and catch Vilgefortz off-guard. Geralt defeated Vilgefortz by beheading the mage. Therefore, whenever Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt meets Vilgefortz again, the Witcher will get his revenge.
