I had the same problem at first, on every piece of armor it should say light or heavy on the right or left hand top corner when u highlight it.

Deathbrand armor is Light Armor, which benefits from Light Armor skill and perks. However, improving the armor through Smithing is ideally done with the Ebony Smithing perk, which is on the Heavy Armor side of the Smithing skill tree.
