Spanish for English is a Duolingolanguage course that teaches Spanish to speakers of English. It was one of the original courses available on Duolingo.[1]
It is the most used course for English speakers, as well as the second-most used course on Duolingo overall. On 17 May 2019 the course had 22.3 million active students.[2]
With respect to pronunciation, vocabulary choices and pronouns/verb forms, it teaches a Latin American variety of Spanish (closest to Mexican, Cuban or Venezuelan), but also accepts other forms (for example, words typical of Spain, or Argentinian voseo verb forms).
They chose the name Yo La Tengo, Spanish for "I have it". The name came from a baseball anecdote from the 1962 season, when New York Mets center fielder Richie Ashburn and shortstop Elio Chacón found themselves colliding in the outfield. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would yell, "I got it!
In Spanish, whenever a feminine noun begins with a, it takes the masculine form of the article (el arte, el ala, el alma) in the singular. In the plural, the article is the normal feminine plural form: las artes, las alas, las almas. The reason for this is to avoid pronouncing two a's in succession.
Only when they grow up the difference between gallinas (feminine) and pollos (masculine) becomes evident. Pollos turn into gallos (roosters), if they are given the time. When both sexes are together in a flock, they are collectively referred to as las gallinas.

So “tengo” can only mean “I have”; “tienes” can only mean “You have”; “tenemos” can only mean “we have”, and so on. So the “yo” is not needed in “tengo un perro” - which can only mean “I have a dog.”
